294. SAINT-RIEUL-DUPOUY (Jean). The Summer in Bordeaux. Bordeaux, Féret, 1850. In-8, 373 p., crushed buff chagrin.a beautifully bound copy in a buff chagrin binding with romantic gilt plate on the boards, gilt fillet on the edges, gilt roulette inside and all edges gilt. Signed autograph letter from the author to the Countess Koucheleff dated 1863. Binding slightly rubbed, one corner dulled, some foxing.
Attached by the same author : L'Hiver à Bordeaux. Bordeaux, Féret, 1851. In-8, ii, 483 p., fir green chagrin. Copy in a binding similar to the previous one, also containing an EAS with the same date pasted on the false title. Minor foxing and defects.
Jean-Baptiste Saint-Rieul-Dupouy (1813-1874) is an endearing personality of the Bordeaux history,
unfortunately a little forgotten today. Born into the Creole bourgeoisie of Saint-Domingue, Jean Baptiste was sent to Paris to study law. He preferred the literary salons, became involved in the
opposition, advocated homeopathic medicine, embraced the Romantic movement, befriended George Sand
with George Sand, Alfred de Vigny and Théophile Gautier.
Villenave d'Ornon, in the Carthusian monastery of Carles, he took an active part in the literary and artistic life of
life in Bordeaux. We owe him the support of many initiatives and his participation in the fame of Arcachon.
Justin Dupuy, in Les Bordelais in 1845, devoted some of his most pungent pages to him.
