* 81. [MAISONNEUVE DE CRONY (Joseph de). Annales historiques de l'Ordre souverain de St Jean de Jérusalem depuis l'année 1725 jusqu'au moment présent. Saint Petersburg, Imperial Printing Office, 1799. In-8, 31 p., [1] p. (errata), marbled tan basane with smooth spine. First edition of this rare work attributed to the commander Joseph de Maisonneuve. According to A. According to A. Blondy, the commander de Maisonneuve de Crony, chamberlain of the king of Poland and founder of a commandery, was also ambassador to St. Petersburg. As a double agent in the service of France, Louis XVI appointed him resident in Stuttgart and during the Revolution he served as an agent for the Grand Master from Switzerland, where he had settled. After Bonaparte took Malta, Grand Master Ferdinand de Hompesch asked the Russian Tsar to become the protector of the Order. Thus, in October 1798, the 249 knights of the Order who had been expelled from their island and taken refuge in the Vorontsov Palace in St. Petersburg proclaimed Paul I Grand Master of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. The book bears witness to these times and reproduces in the appendix the official documents of accession of the various sovereigns (L'ordre de Malte et Malte dans les affaires polonaises et russes au XVIIIe siècle, in Revue des Études Slaves 66-4, 739). Provenance: the German naturalist, specialist in ornithology and oology, Richard Karl Wilhelm von König-Warthausen (1830-1911), attested by the presence of his remarkable engraved and watercolored bookplate, dated 1869 and pasted on the reverse of the front cover, as well as his handwritten ex-libris on a flyleaf. On the armorial bookplate, one notices the presence of a cross of Malta. Binding worn, vignette with Maltese cross pasted on the spine above the t.p., halo on the first few leaves, some foxing.
