91. PHILIPPE DE PRÉTOT (Étienne André Philippe, dit). Universal Atlas for the study of geography and ancient and modern history. Paris, Nyon, 1787. Small folio (30 x 25 cm), front, ii, [4] f., 125 single, double-page or folded maps mounted on tabs (out of 126), fawn-colored basane with smooth spine.
An uncommon atlas by Philippe de Prétot (1710-1787) which, on the eve of the Revolution, integrated the most recent discoveries of travelers, which made the Journal des Savants of the time write that this was "one of the most convenient, extensive and complete atlases that have appeared in a long time". It contains particular and uncommon maps: the Bay of Manila, the Celebes, the Strait of Buttons, the roadstead of Batavia, the Cape of Good Hope, the Strait of Magellan and its bays, etc.
We note the presence of a map 6 bis, of the map 10 numbered 11 and the absence of map 36 (announced as the surroundings of Paris in the table). It thus consists of 125 carefully watercolored maps mounted on tabs. The atlas is also filled with several other old maps and plans.
Binding worn with leather tears at the corners and edges, title-piece missing, a small tear without missing at the time-zone map, annotations in the margins of the maps of the United Provinces, Swiss cantons, Italy, Germany, Austria, Bavaria and several other maps, slight halo in the margins of several maps (sometimes going on the engraved part but not serious), freckles on the map of Turkey of Europe and Turkey, on the map of Africa, ink stain in the margin of one of the maps of the Americas extending about 2 cm over the engraved part, ghost marks on the maps of La Plata and the Falkland Islands, light halos on the map of the Papuan land, other minor defects.
