104. SUE (Eugene). The mysteries of the people through the ages. Paris, Librairie du progrès, s.d. (late 19th century). 10 vol. in-4, illustrated with plates. Half brown basane, spines decorated. Binding rubbed. Eugène Sue is considered as one of the greatest popular writers of the 19th century. Having adhered to socialist ideas, he produced a number of social novels that triggered the wrath of the Republic and then of the Second Empire. In November 1849, Maurice Lachâtre, his friend and publisher, put on sale the first issues of Les Mystères du peuple, using stratagems to thwart the censorship. In spite of these precautions, the publication is interrupted several times and lasts until 1857. The work is put on the Index by Rome, condemned by the bishops of France and the censors of the Second Empire. Finally, in 1857, 60,000 copies were seized. Shocked, ill and exiled, Eugène Sue died. The court ordered the destruction of the work for outrage against public and religious morality and decency, outrage against the Catholic religion, incitement to hatred and contempt of citizens against each other, incitement to hatred and contempt of the government, apology of facts qualified as crimes or offences by the penal law, attacks against the principle of property. Enclosed from the same : Literary Museum, selection of contemporary French and foreign literature. Ninth series. The seven capital sins. Paris, Au bureau du siècle, s.d. Large in-4 half fir green basane, smooth spine decorated and titled.
