124 DESAULT (Pierre Joseph) and BICHAT (Xavier). Surgical works of P.J. 2 volumes, contemporary brown half-basin, smooth spines decorated with gilded fillets, green title and gummed pages. 2 vol. in-8, viii p., 410 p., [2] f. / [1] f., 528 p. Portrait-frontispice and 9 plates engraved on steel, some folded.
A third volume is enclosed, in identical binding and which forms the continuation, published one year later: Traité des maladies des voies urinaires. Very rare first edition. Copy signed by hand by Bichat at the end of the notice of volume 1 to prevent forgeries. Desault's professional career was laborious and eventful, as he came from a poor background, and therefore without resources, he had to circumvent many difficulties, and this thanks to his extraordinary skills. Finally, at the age of 28, he gave public teaching courses in the field of anatomy and surgery which were followed by more than 300 students. In 1788 he created a surgical clinic attended by many French and foreign students. At the time of the French Revolution, he was considered the first surgeon in Europe. From 1791 to 1794 he published a Journal of Surgery. The articles are written by his students but expose his own doctrine, his lessons on urinary tract diseases and the interesting observations collected at the clinic of the Hôtel-Dieu. Desault died suddenly at the age of 51, after having given care to the dauphin incarcerated in the Temple tower. Many rumors will arise from this sudden death. Bichat, his pupil and protégé, found himself alone at the age of 24, and began to publish the works of the deceased.
