217. [BARTHELEMY (Joseph)]. Memoirs of a... - Lot 217 - A.Blanchy | E.Lacombe - Bordeaux Chartrons - Bordeaux Enchères
217. [BARTHELEMY (Joseph)]. Memoirs of a Minister of the Marshal. Auch, F. Cocharaux, 1948. 2 volumes gd. in-8, 505-727 p., half-basin Lavallière with corners, cover cons. Rare work. Limited edition of 100 numbered copies, this one of the numbered copies of the main edition on vellum. Joseph Barthélémy (1874-1945) was the Vichy Minister of Justice from 1941 to 1943 and one of the signatories of the law on the Status of Jews of June 2, 1941. Indicted at the Liberation, he was imprisoned in Auch on October 6, 1944 and brought before the High Court of Justice. His interrogation began (the transcript forms the second volume) but he died of tongue cancer in May 1945, before the end of the legal proceedings. The first volume of his memoirs is written in the spontaneity of the moment, without the corrective hindsight of history, as the author did not survive them. As such, they are a precious historical testimony of the Vichy spirit. Sent by the son, Joseph Barthélémy, to Maurice Trouette (1922-2004) on the cover.
