[Place Vendome]. The Place Vendome in three... - Lot 172 - A.Blanchy | E.Lacombe - Bordeaux Chartrons - Bordeaux Enchères
[Place Vendome]. The Place Vendome in three centuries, 1903. In plano (58 x 42 cm), green half-maroquin with corners, spine ribbed, gilt fillets on the spines, gilt head. An exceptional composite collection by the famous London lawyer and Napoleonic collector Alexander Meyrick Broadley (1847-1916). Provenance attested by his engraved bookplate pasted to the reverse of the front cover. The collection contains more than 120 original documents, inserted in the center of openwork or pastedown leaves, and relating to the Place Louis-le-Grand, which later became the Place Vendôme and hosted the famous column commemorating the battle of Austerlitz. The title page is a clever montage between a handwritten title and the reuse of the booklet published by the Société de Publication d'Art in 1899 for the Ritz Hotel. The other pages of this rare booklet are reassembled and accompany the thematic classification of the pieces with their text. The original documents that make up the collection are engravings of the time, many of which are in period colors and one of which is canvas-backed, a handwritten document on parchment signed by Caesar, Duke of Vendome, dated 1613, and several handwritten documents on paper from the seventeenth century, signed by Caesar or Elisabeth de Vendome, of Louis de Bourbon, duke of Vendôme, a manuscript on parchment signed by Louis XIV (secretary) and countersigned by Philippeaux, which is a letter of remission in favor of Jacques de Vic, lord of Bachoué, for a young cousin judged in absentia but escaped from his prison, etc., as well as modern press clippings and typescripts. There is also a remarkable print of the Antonine column by Giovanni-Battista Piranese (1720-1778). On the last few leaves, several autograph letters from Charles-Gustave Morlock, owner of the Hotel Bristol place Vendôme, who tries to answer Broadley's historical questions. Good condition, binding a little rubbed, minor defects.
