Miklos Boskovits proposed the attribution of our triptych to Bicci di Lorenzo in 1998. Trained in the studio of his father, Lorenzo di Bicci, our painter remained attached to this early education throughout his long career. Bicci di Lorenzo belonged to that group of artists active between the two centuries, who chose not to adhere to the formal renewal of the Renaissance, and who were courageously carried along by the wave of international Gothic. We can place our artist among Lorenzo Monaco and Gentile da Fabriano. His best-known compositions, such as the Visitation of 1435 (Velletri, Chapter Museum), remain faithful to the lessons of the Florentine Trecento. At the end of his life, he was entrusted with the fresco decoration of the church of S. Francesco in Arezzo. Boskovits dates our triptych to the painter's youth, when he was still in his father's studio (written communication dated December 7, 1998).
