69 - VERNE (Jules). Mathias Sandorf Paris, J. Hetzel, s.d. ( - Lot 69
69 - VERNE (Jules). Mathias Sandorf Paris, J. Hetzel, s.d. (1898). Gilt globe boards.
Type 3, last board Engel type h, catalog CR. Cartonnage unknown to Bottin, on which Jauzac and Weissenberg focused (Jauzac (P.) & Weissenberg (E.). Un rare et étonnant cartonnage de Mathias Sandorf, in Bull. soc. Jules Verne, n° 140). The only triple volume with a gilded globe, produced in a small series, probably due to the unanticipated exhaustion of cartonnages with banners, it is one of the rarest configurations of Hetzel cartonnages and also the most likely to be counterfeited. The unusual presence of the 1885 catalog at the end forces us to express serious reservations, all the more so as the copy has not escaped a few repaints. These repaints can be seen at the edge of the title cartouche, which is itself a little bumpy, as if to hide an inlay. The first endpaper itself reveals a skilful assembly at the hinge. The present copy can therefore be considered to have been entirely reassembled on the basis of a probably defective copy. In addition to these important reservations, the first cover is slightly rubbed, with a few marks on the last cover and constant freckling. As returns are not accepted on this copy, please bid only after examination.
