Émile GALLE (1846-1904) - Lot 310
Émile GALLE (1846-1904) "But where are the snows of yesteryear?" Original three-lobed neck glass tube vase with frosted base and polychrome decoration in light relief in imitation of medieval illuminations and figures. Signed and dated in relief 1884 on the body of the vase and marked under the base "Redite la cristallerie de Nancy, Gallé". H. 21.8 cm (Firing bubble at bottom) A similar example is in the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk. The text on this vase alludes to the Affaire de la Tour de Nesle, which broke out within the Capetian dynasty in the 13th century. In 1461, François Villon alluded to this episode in his famous Ballade des dames du temps jadis.
