190. DETMOLD (Edward Julius ill.), MAETERLINCK (Maurice). Li - Lot 190
190. DETMOLD (Edward Julius ill.), MAETERLINCK (Maurice). Life of the bee. London, G. Allen, 1912. In-4 illustrated with 13 colored engravings, printed on fine "unbleached Arnold" strong vellum paper, publisher's gold-stamped ivory boards, handsome historiated plate on front board, glassine. Second printing of the work, the original edition dates from 1911. Twin brothers Edward and Maurice had worked together since childhood, until an excess of chloroform took Maurice's life at the age of 25 in 1908. They had their first exhibition at the Royal Academy at the age of 13, illustrating their first book for a publisher at 16. By the time they were teenagers, they had acquired a printing press so they could make their own proofs. From the outset, they specialized in animal and botanical subjects. From 1908 onwards, Edward Julius Detmold continued their work alone. A fine copy, free of foxing. Spine slightly oiled with small stains. Also included: - DETMOLD (E. J., ill.), FABRE (Jean Henri). Fabre's book of insects. New York, Tudor, 1935. Publisher's illustrated boards, 12 color illustrations of insects in their natural environment. Spine slightly faded, fine copy. - DETMOLD (E. J., ill.), MAETERLINCK (Maurice). Hours of gladness. London, Allen; New York, Dodd, Mead, 1912. Publisher's stamped ivory boards. Illustrated with 20 color engravings. The book contains several essays by Maeterlinck, l'Intelligence des fleurs, Nouvelles du Printemps, Fleurs des champs, Fleurs désuètes, la rage de l'abeille, etc. First edition of Detmold's delightful illustration. Pity, the paper is covered with freckles, only the plates are free of them.
